Lungta's voyage from England to the USA via
the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Venezuela, the ABC
Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao), Haiti,
Jamaica, the Cayman
Islands, & Cuba. "Lungta" entered the USA at Key West and is currently in
Green Cove Springs
on the St. John's River on the east
coast of Florida just south of the Georgia border.
We left Gloucester Docks
(in the west of England, not New England!) on April 19th 1995 in our Salar 40 "Lungta"
bound for the
Mediterranean. We sailed via the Scilly Isles, Guernsey in
the Channel Islands, then on to France, Spain, Portugal and
Gibraltar.
We spent three years in the Med. and visited most countries
bordering its coasts, from Gibraltar to Turkey and back, spending two winters in Palma de Mallorca.
We left Gibraltar in September 1999 bound for the Canary Isles where we
spent a month or so exploring most of the islands. In December we left Puerto Mogan on
Gran Canaria heading for Barbados. We had friends ahead and astern
of us and kept in touch by ssb radio.
After twenty three days at sea we arrived in Carlisle Bay, Barbados on December 24th
1999. We had a great welcome from friends already there and had a splendid
Christmas and New Year. We even enjoyed being dunked in the surf when
landing the dinghy on the beach. Barbados was a great introduction to
tropical living - friendly people, a great fruit and veg. market and excellent
local beer and Mount Gay rum. What more could a yachtie want? Click

A big thank you is due here to Bill, G4FRN who runs the UK Maritime Mobile
Net on 14,303 kHz, and Trudy, 8P6QM who is Net Control of the Atlantic Net on
21,400 kHz. Also amongst the twenty or so yachts that crossed with us (which we called the "NARC", i.e.
the NON Atlantic Race for Cruisers) was Jim Corenman KE6RK, the inventor of the
Airmail program for emailing via amateur radio. He gave us daily weather forecasts on our way
across. Click here for

From Barbados we had an easy overnight sail to St. Lucia, and then South down
the island chain, stopping off in the Grenadines and Grenada and on to Trinidad, where,
like a lot of other people on boats, we lingered for some months. It is a
difficult place to leave!
From Trinidad we visited Venezuela and its offshore islands, then on to the ABC
Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao). Christmas 2000 was
spent at anchor in Spanish Water, Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles.
After Curacao
From Curacao we sailed to Haiti, then on to the north coast of
Jamaica, visiting Port Antonio, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, the Cayman
Islands and Cuba.
We entered the United States at Key West and spent hurricane season up
the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers on the west coast of Florida. The winter of
1999-2000 we spent in the Bahamas, visiting the Berry Islands, Nassau, and the
Exumas. "Lungta" is currently based in Green Cove Springs on the St. John's River, about 20 miles from downtown Jacksonville, Florida.
Torpedo
Torpedowas rescued in Spain, when a very small kitten. She
and her mother were living in a cardboard box in the boatyard in Almerimar.
She is all white with blue eyes. Today, nine years later, she is a happy and very spoilt cat.
